Teachers need to focus on their own wellness to best meet the needs of their students. If we are not healthy and focused then it translates to the classroom environment. Teaching is also a high-stress job, and staying stress-free is a challenge.

In this article, I want to look at natural ways to reduce stress that I have found to help me in the classroom, and also look at some supplements that could also be very beneficial.

Ease Up on that Stress

Stress can affect not only our mood at the time, but also our health over the long term. This leads to an ineffective classroom/work environment and can greatly affect your body and health.

Stress can lead to many long-lasting conditions like heart problems, anxiety, and obesity. Combating this issue in an environment designed for stress is not easy, but with practice and patience can be managed.

Other professions have similar stresses, so how do we deal with this? How can we make it throughout the day in one piece?

Stress is a killer to the teaching profession, and many amazing people have quit because of the workload and demands placed on them. I almost quit teaching because of stress. I did develop anxiety and started having heart issues before I decided to tackle the issue. There were several steps I took to overcome my stress.

Supplements to help with Stress

Good quality supplements could be a good way to help you out.

The supplement Ashwagandha was a game changer for me. Its an ancient medicinal herb that is said to have many benefits. Including:

  • reduce stress, anxiety, and depression
  • may reduce inflammation
  • may improve brain function

Ashwagandha

Start the day Positive

  • Research has shown that getting a good nights sleep can greatly benefit your health. 7-9 hours is the general consensus on the amount of sleep you need a night.
  • Also, start your day with a good breakfast. Fuel your body for the day ahead. Make sure there is good protein in there as protein helps you feel fuller longer, and try to stay away from sugar-rich foods as this can make you sluggish throughout the day.
  • Instead of thinking about what you have to do, think of what you get to do. Something as small as focusing on the positives aspects of your day can greatly help your stress level. This can be greatly overlooked as not important, but the mind is a powerful tool. If we can convince ourselves that we will have a great day then we will. If we go into the day negative then we will have a bad day.

Support

Surround yourself with people that support you, and you trust.

First, find at least one administrator that you feel comfortable sharing your feelings with. In talking with administrators I have learned that they want you to talk to them, and tell them how things are going (positive and negative). If there is not an admin on your specific campus that you trust see if you can find one at another campus that can help give you advice if needed.

Also, have a plan with an administrator (or coworker) for emergencies. Things happen in the classroom, and everyone has those moments where you need just 5 minutes to reset yourself. An administrator can come in and watch your class while you take a 5-minute walk around the building (or something) to reset your thoughts and come back in fresh. This could be important in keeping you from doing or saying something that could come back to haunt you.

Have Goals

The great thing about teaching is that every day is its own challenge. However, some teachers might feel like they are in a rut, or bored. You might have done this awhile, or you might feel like you are not being challenged enough.

When this happened to me I made a goal for myself. I wanted to have a bigger impact on my campus, and I wanted admin to finally notice me in a positive way.

The goal that started everything was to rewrite the curriculum for what I was teaching that year to make them more engaging and student-centered (I wanted out of the book work and worksheet trap).

That led to me getting the opportunity to create my own program on campus for Gifted and Talented children.

That then led to me being hired to help start the new STEAM Academy in my district.

All of these goals gave me something to obtain (other than the normal classroom teaching element), and it gave me something to look forward to every day. It gave my job more of a purpose and led to more opportunities in the district.

Negativity

Stay away from the negative people on campus. They tend to suck the joy out of the job, and can bring down the people around them. Don’t mistake venting every once in a while with being negative though. Everyone needs to vent, but there is a difference.

Looking back on my career, my most stressful years were those spent working around people who complained constantly. I did not realize at the time how much it affected me until I was placed in a new positive environment around people who focused on the joys of the job instead of all the negative aspects of the job.

Surround yourself with people who love life and are positive. Being around people like this is a game changer.

    Teaching is a very rewarding but stressful job. It is important that teachers take care of themselves so that they can teach our kids to the best of their abilities.

     I agree that a good supplement is essential. A lot of people complain about supplements being a waste of money but I disagree. 

    They make a big difference in reducing stress and increasing better bodily functions. I also think that it is good to have a good support team who will help you through tough times and help you realize that you are doing awesome. 

    A lot of times we don’t feel like we’re doing as good as we really are. I hope this helps teachers reduce their stress levels.

  2. Hey, I really like this post because I can relate to this as I am getting a lot of stress from my job lately. I agree with you that surround yourself with positive mindsets is really important. I am someone who get influenced easily by the people around me and I find that it is better to stay with people who talks about their goal in the future instead of people just complain about their life. Also, it is a good point that you brought up about how setting goals can help me stay focus on the right track. Time passes quickly when I am focusing on hitting my goal and I don’t feel as stressful as before. Thank you for the amazing post and I look forward to more posts like this.

    I’m an old pro when it comes to stress and am always interested in ideas that help relieve it.

    Recently, stress was implicated in a very serious medical issue I had. It’s just amazing how harmful it can be. 

    This is the first time I’ve heard of Ashwagandha. Perhaps I’ll try this. 

    Something that I’ve been doing is getting regular sleep. It seems to help if I go to bed and wake up at approximately the same time. 

    You are so right when you say sugar-filled foods make you sluggish. It’s so true. By the same token, nutritious foods lift you up!

    There’s no doubt that negativity can zap your energy. I try to avoid negative people who make negative comments.

  4. Great job outlining some of the most important aspects of managing stress. All of these tips can be translated into any stressful environment – whether at work or at home etc. I myself actually take ashwaghanda daily in capsule form of a different brand. I think it helps lol. I’m a little unsure as I take such good care of myself otherwise, I’m not sure if I’ve noticed a difference!

    In terms of ignoring negative people – much easier said than done! You can’t necessarily avoid certain people, especially when you work closely with them. Instead, the focus should be facing the behavior by listening and communicating respectfully and honestly.  Whether it’s your own negative emotions or the negativity of others – avoiding it only ignores the problem and does not address it. While this may work at times and may even be necessary depending on your emotional health at times, it is not always the best or right answer. Now ensuring you surround yourself with positive people? That I completely agree with! Both to support and encourage you and to also help replenish your energy stores drained from the negative people.

Your comment brought up a good point and got me thinking, you also don’t want to count those people out. It would be a good practice to, instead of avoiding negativity try to redirect the conversation to make it more productive. Something for me to definitely think about. Thanks!
